Simon Rowe will be a featured speaker at the Tedx San Joaquin “Just the Right Amount of Wrong”
Welcome friends and visitors!
I am honored to be appointed as the new executive director of the Roots, Jazz and American Music program at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, RJAM. Although I have enjoyed my work at the helm of the Brubeck Institute for five years, I am excited to continue working with the best and brightest young talent in the jazz world in my new role.
In partnership with SFJAZZ, our RJAM students will enjoy access to a vast array of world class jazz artists in concerts and masterclasses. They will also have the opportunity to study with members of the SFJAZZ Collective, who will form the core of our teaching faculty. We will embrace a global, Afrocentric approach to the teaching of music theory and history and most learning will occur in the context of small “working” ensembles, with multiple local and regional performance opportunities.
As a performing artist/educator, prior to my work at the Brubeck Institute, I have worked and lived primarily in the Midwest (Chicago, St Louis and Indianapolis), mentoring with regional icons such as saxophonist Willie Akins. Since 2001 I have led my own trio with whom I have toured internationally and recorded. Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Leibman, Tim Hagens, John Fedchock, Mulgrew Miller, Jimmy Heath, Stephanie Nakasian, Lucia Newell, Debbie Duncan, Willie Akins, Jeanne Trevor, Bob Mintzer, Luqman Hamza, Janiece Jaffe, Marvin Stamm, Dianne Schurr and Claudio Roditi are among the artists with whom I have performed. From these artists and many others, I have gained a first-hand understanding of jazz music, its history and development as an art form. Read More
